Blast Cew Training

The package is divided into six sections all from the Australian "Metalliferous Mines Training Package MNM05".
 
The first three units are aimed at a blast crew member, those units are;
  • Maintain Magazines
  • Store, Handle & Transport Explosives
  • Charge Production Blast Holes

The final three units offer a career progression as a shot firer, those are;

  • Conduct Secondary Blasting
  • Initiate Blasts
  • Initiate Blasts by Remote Control


Requirements

Applicants should posses a medium to high level of reading and literacy in order to analyse and interpret legisation and standards, and be currently employed in the industry.

Who should attend?

These courses are designed for existing or new applicant Shot firers who want training to apply for a “Shotfirers Licence” under Western Australian Legislation. Supervisors and managers will also benefit from the training, allowing them to optimise their area of operations and ensure compliance to legislation
This training is tailored to the mining industry in Western Australia only.


What sort of things will be covered in the course?

Many of the topics covered will draw heavily on your local site procedures and reinforce the roll they play in conjunction with mining legislation.
  • Know how to prime and Charge blast-holes to ensure optimum safety and performance.
  • Select a suitable Initiation System, including delay intervals and hook-up methods.
  • Modify Blast Patterns in difficult or unusual areas so as to maintain good results.
  • Maintain and manage an explosive magazine in line with Australian standards and Western Australian Legislation.
  • Handle and transport explosives in line with Australian standards and Western Australian Legislation.
  • Control excessive Fly rock, Vibrations, and Air blast.
  • Identify potential safety hazards relating to explosives. 
  • Comply with Explosives and Mining Regulations pertaining to explosives.
  • Workshop experience in designing and initiation systems to achieve desired results.
  • How to decide Blasting Patterns suited to different rock conditions.
  • Causes of Fly rock, Vibrations, Air blast so that these can be minimised.
  • Identifying ways of controlling and managing Blasting Costs.
  • Recognition of common Safety Hazards associated with blasting in a mining environment.
  • Prepare for Blasting at a mine
  • Blast clearance & firing 
  • Post blast operations
  • Blast calculations
  • Examples of accidents

Registration

The fee covers lectures and lecture facilities, manual, Log book, accreditation, morning tea and lunches.

Shot firer - Qualification Process
  •  In order to successfully complete this training, candidates need to be currently employed in the mining industry.

  •  Successfully complete the approved 4 day shot firer theory course comprising of;
      
    o MNMG205A Maintain Magazines
    o MNMG210A Store, Handle & Transport Explosives
    o MNMG412A Initiate Blast
    o MNMG321A Charge Production Blast Holes

  •   Take the Modular Training “Practical Assessment” workbook and get an accredited Workplace assessor that is approved by Modular Training to conduct and sign-off the practical requirements as listed. This must be completed at your place of employment (Modular Training may provide a qualified assessor to come to site at a charge). 

  • Complete the entries in the Shot firer Logbook provided by Modular Training as a record of practical experience and 
    send the completed and signed “Practical Assessment” booklet and the logbook to Modular Training for verification.
